ART THERAPY

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the art-making process, applied psychological theory, counseling approaches, and the final art product to help individuals experiencing various psychological, emotional, and interpersonal challenges.   The process of creating a visual art piece, being aware of how it makes you feel as you make it and how it helps you communicate is more important than having a beautiful art product. With a professional art therapists support, individuals may experience an increase in emotional resiliency, self-esteem, increased insight, the ability to resolve conflicts, among many other benefits.

HOW DOES ART THERAPY WORK?

Creating engages people mentally, physically, and emotionally. The art product in art therapy is viewed as an extension of yourself--your inner world expressed tangibly and meaningfully. You do not need to be skilled in art to benefit from art therapy. Art therapists are expertly trained to  guide you through each step of creating and processing the work you make. Your art can help you explore emotions, gain personal insight, and identify patterns or themes that affect your thoughts.  emotions, and behaviors.  The benefits of this process can offer healing encounters for people experiencing stress, anxiety, grief/loss, depression, traumatic experiences, and challenging life transitions.

HOW DOES ONLINE ART THERAPY WORK?

Art Therapy online looks a little bit different than in person art therapy, however, it can still be effective and beneficial. Instead of going to an office, you can participate from the comfort of your own home. I will work with you to create an individualized plan and provide resources for you to obtain the tools needed for our time together. Sometimes we might talk more in our time together and art-making is occurs in between sessions. If you're unable to create art between sessions, we will dedicate our session to making art. We'll talk about the process and the art you've created.  I believe that you are the expert in finding insight into your work. I will walk you through the process and will gently ask questions, help you notice things, and hold the space to process what emerges. 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING ART THERAPY?

Deciding to reach out for help can sometimes be difficult but is the best first step! After reaching out, you can expect a response within 24 to 48 hours to set up a consultation phone call. This allows us to touch base, talk about what brings you to art therapy, and allows you to get to know me better too. Making sure you feel comfortable with your therapist is one of the most important parts of the therapeutic alliance. If you decide that you would like to work with me I will walk you through the next steps.  We will work together to select goals for art therapy and identify ways to achieve those goals. Periodically we will discuss how the therapeutic process is going and touch base on those specific goals we create.
